Home Safety List       Make your home safe and comfortable Install smoke detectors in bedrooms, hallways, kitchen, garage and furnace / hot water heater areas Install carbon monoxide detectors on each level of a home having any type of gas appliance Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when you change your clocks in the spring and the fall Have a fire escape plan and practice it Use power strips with built-in circuit breakers instead of extension cords on a two pronged outlet Make sure fireplace damper and flue are clean and in good condition before burning any wood and keep all combustible materials at least 3 feet from fireplace opening Use child-proof locks and outlet protectors for small children and pets Clean your stove, oven and hood vent regularly to avoid fire hazards Never use the stovetop as counter space Keep a multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher in the kitchen Keep all flammable or combustible items away from heat sources in the garage Don't overload your circuits and make sure that breaker boxes are easily accessible
